Mission:
1 - Third Contact
Location: Ensign Sleeping Corridor
Timeline: MD 03 -1600
A message flahsed across the ensign's PADDs. The message said, "Congratulations, you have been selected for an away mission to Apergos. At 0700 tomorrow, you will report to the transporter room and beam down to the planet Apergos. You will be engaging in a mission to clean ancient buildings. Details will be given to you on the planet. All power scrubbing tools will be required."
"Woah! We get to go on an away mission!" Serena forgetting that she tried to keep herself from showing emotions then again, being the dour one can at times get so .... blah.
Amelix also received the message. She immediately ran up to Serena and wrapped her up in a bear hug. "You too?! Who else is going?! Who else is going?! I mean, how lucky can we get? I can't wait to step on another planet! I wonder if the ground is squishy or marshy down there! Or what is the atmosphere made of? There's so much research that we can do in the name of science!" Her head rocked back and forth as anyone within the corridor moaned at flecks of light refracting into their eyes as Amelix moved.
Walking up to Amelix and Serena with a PADD in his hand, Devon sighed. "I will be on the away mission as well. Going to be nice getting off the ship for a while. Even thought, I would prefer it wasn't a cleaning detail."
"Well, you know, I've heard that is what ensigns are supposed to do. gives us-" Serena hmming for a moment then finished "experience, growth and character building. I do wonder though if that is truly the result of what will happen."
Hunt raised an eyebrow. "I'm a security officer, not a cleaner."
From his bunk where he'd been attempting a nap in the bit of free time he had, Aza brought a hand to the bridge of his nose and rubbed. It was impossible to miss the enthusiastic banter of Amelix or the exclamation of Serena, or the low annoyance of Hunt. Why had he bothered trying to get a nap?
Instead he fished around in the alcove above his head and pulled out his own PADD, looking at it and frowning as he read the message once, twice, and then a third time. Did they need a medic for this job? The spot between his brows creased with a frown as he read the message a fourth time for good measure. Nothing about medicine. Just cleaning. With a sigh he flopped back, casually dropping the PADD onto the bunk next to the inside wall before steeling himself and rolling so he could stick his head out over the side.
"Me too," he commented from his perch. "Power scrubbing here we come." The last was delivered with a weak attempt at enthusiasm. Maybe there was going to be something interesting to this. Who knew? If he pretended he was cleaning wounds instead of walls would that help?
Amelix answer Aza with a lot more enthusiasm, "Come on! We're going to have fun! On a really away mission! Think about all the possible things we can learn! Who knows what we will find when we clean things up?! We could be on a grand mission of discovery! We could even get something named after us! Could you imagine that?! Come on, Aza!"
Devon sighed as he scowled a bit. Amelix's excitement was starting to annoy him. But the last thing he wanted to do was to take the proverbial wind out of her sail. "What do you actually think we'll find down there?"
"I don't know!" Amelix admitted. "But isn't that part of the fun?! I mean, did you read the report from when the Ceritos was here?!"
Simmering down more than what Amelix was doing, Serena leaned casually against the wall, listening to the others.
"Well we do need to be careful, just to make certain we don't step on or into something that might start some havoc." Serena turned to look at Amelix.
"This mean, Amelix, try to slow down your pace, just to make certain you don't set something off. With how quickly you move around, that might happen or something might break. Then we'll be in such a mess," the intelligence ensigh remarked dryly.
"Please! I'm a scientist!" Amelix replied simply. "I'm always careful!" If for emphasis, she raised a foam sprayer into the air which caused all of the ensigns to get sudsy. "Oops!" Amelix told everyone meekly.
"Careful, my ass," Devon mumbled as he wiped off the suds. "We now know exactly who not to hand the phaser to on the away mission."
"Well." Serena remarked. "She made certain that it wasn't something dangerous since it is foam and not, something deadly." picking up some of the foam to play with it.
Amelix pouted at Devon, "Why are you always so mean? Did someone put a Moopsy in your breakfast bowl?" She then turned to Serena and whispered conspiratorily, "Remind me to put some horta hot sauce into his next meal!"
Devon sighed as he rubbed his both hands on the side of his head. Four years at the Academy and two years at a previous assignment. And yet, he found himself relegated to a cleaning crew. His family had served in Starfleet for several generations and never heard anything about having to be on a cleaning detail on an away mission. "You know that I can hear you right?"
"You have good ears for a human!" Amelix exclaimed. "I should do some testing on you to see your decible range! Wouldn't you like to know that?" she asked good naturedly.
Ensign Harudori looked over from her bunk after recieving the message. "Looks like I'm going too..." she said. "First away mission... I hope I don't screw it up..."
"Why would you say that? Unless you're Hunt, you should have a positive attitude!" Amelix replied with her extraordinary zeal.
Devon looked her way and simply raised an annoyed eyebrow. It was almost as if Amelix was simply happy with existing. It wasn't as if he felt that he was too good for tasks that no one else wanted to do. But it was the fact that they had skills that could be used for more useful tasks. "Trust me, there's no way any of us could screw this up."
"Well, as long as none of you get hurt. I won't have much to do," Harudori replied with a smile.
Amelix leaned into Harudori and asked, "You do know what happened last time that a Federation ship was here, don't you?!" There was a large grin on Amelix's face as she eagerly awaited a response. It did not come quickly enough, so she told everyone, "Commander Ransom became a Godlike being and nearly destroyed Cerritos and everyone on the planet too!"
"I'm fairly certain that was just a bad rumor," Hunt spoke up.
"Then why is it in the mission record?" Amelix asked skeptically.
"You actually read it?"
"Of course I read it! Every scientist knows that you have to look at data from before to analyze a situation! You should have learned that at the Academy, I think! Shouldn't you have?!" Amelix responded nearly aghast at Devon's statements.
"Didn't think cleaning would involve heavy reading," Devon replied. "Go ahead and summarize it for the rest of us."
"That's part of your problem," Amelix told Devon. "You don't think!" She then looked around her friends, or at least bunkmates and said, "This is what happened: the USS Cerritos made second contact with the Apergosians on their homeworld. The away mission was commanded by Commander Jack Ransom who was in charge of seeing that the Apergosians select an available subspace communication number. Meanwhile, Ensign Beckett Mariner power-washed some of the buildings in their capital city. However, when the soot was removed from one of the buildings on that planet, an ancient machine was inadvertently activated, which somehow caused a surge of strange energy to strike Jack Ransom and transform him into a being with god-like powers. He was only subdued when Ensign Mariner kicked him numerous times in the nether regions."
"Well, that bites in truth." Serena said offhandedly. "Just the fact that we're going to be going on an away mission, is exciting."
"Now that's the spirit!" Amelix beamed smiles and her crystals on her head beamed light around the corridor. "So, when are we doing this again?!"
"I am not certain but they will end up letting us know." Serena giving a smile.
